Unlocking the Molecular Secrets of Ginseng as a Platform for Drug Discovery
Post-genomic Era of Traditional Chinese MedicineDespite high expectations,genomics-based drug discovery to date has been disappointing. The multifactorial nature of chronic diseases is probably the most significant problem in target discovery.Surprisingly, only 600-1,500 genes of the ~30,000 genes in the human genome are thought to be potential drug targets 1.In fact,6,000-plus currently marketed drugs interact with less than 120 molecular targets, and the 100 best-selling drugs interact with 43 targets.A quick survey reveals that 61% of the 877 drugs introduced between 1981-2002 could be traced to,or inspired by,natural products, and 74% of anticancer drugs in current use are derived from nature.
