Recent Initiatives for GHG Reductions in Singapore and Their Likely Impact on the Construction Industry
Rising sea levels, glacier retreat,Arctic shrinkage, altered patterns of rain and agriculture, and extreme weather related catastrophes such as hurricanes and tsunamis are often cited as consequences of climate change. Most climate change models predict increasing storm severity with greater precipitation levels and higher wind velocities in the future. Thus, there is no doubt that climate change is going to be to be one of the biggest environmental problems the world would face in the time to come.It is said that the emission of greenhouse gases (GHG) by the energy and construction sectors is one of the main human induced causes of climate change. Thus, most legislative and policy initiatives taken by countries to deal with climate change have a significant impact on the said sectors. The aim of this paper is to identify the key recent initiatives taken in Singapore for reduction of greenhouse gases and their likely impact on the construction industry.
