Numerical Study on the Impact of Air-conditioning Use on Outdoor Thermal Comfort and Heat Island Formation in Urban Districts

This paper presents a numerical study to evaluate the impact of air-conditioning use on outdoor thermal comfort and urban heat island potential.A coupled simulation for simultaneously predicting the external surface temperature and indoor temperature and cooling loads were carried out using a 3D-CAD based thermal simulation tool developed by the authors. The mean radiant temperature (MRT) was used as an evaluation parameter to assess outdoor thermal comfort. The heat island potential (HIP) and anthropogenic heat from the air-conditioning system were used to assess the impact on heat island formation. An urban district located at downtown Tokyo was selected for analysis.Through simulations,it was found that the MRT in the shaded spaces such as urban canopies or street canyons is lower than the ambient air temperature, and a greater MRT reduction can be realized in the shaded spaces where most of surrounding surfaces is windows.Using this simulation tool is able to quantify the beneficial and detrimental effects of air-conditioning use on heat island potential mitigation and energy consumption increase (anthropogenic heat) for an urban district.
