Appropriate Parameters of the ASHRAE Clear Sky Model for Cooling Load Calculation in Thailand
An accurate cooling load calculation is a key factor in designing an air-conditioning system.American Society of Heating,Refrigerating and Air-conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE)introduces heat balance method as the cooling load calculation procedure,by which, the solar radiation is a major contributor to the heat gain of a building. The ASHRAE clear day model is widely used in estimating for the solar radiation on buildings.Although, the model is appropriate for calculating the cooling load in the United States, but can not give acceptable results for tropical countries due to the climate difference. So,the objectives of this study is to find an appropriate atmospheric extinction coefficient (B) and diffuse radiation factor (C) of the ASHRAE clear sky model for Thailand a tropical country and to increase the accuracy of cooling load calculation to design an air-conditioner used in Thailand.A least square method is used to fit the meteorological solar data and to determine the appropriate parameters of the model. The result of this study shows that an error of cooling load with new obtained parameters is less than 1% compared to 8% of the original parameters,so the accuracy of designing air conditioner will be improved. This approach can be applied for other locations by adjusting these model parameters according to their local sky conditions.
