Propagation characteristics of ground vibrations produced by rock motions
In this paper, characteristics of ground vibrations caused by rock motions in the channel beds were examined both experimentally and theoretically. The ground vibration was detected by three geophones installed in a straight line at the surface of the channel bed. The signals were discussed in terms of the frequency range, the phase speed and the spatial decay rate. The sphere-packing model of granular rocks proposed by Duffy & Mindlin (1957) was also used to estimate the theoretical phase speed of the ground vibration and compared with the experimental data. Our results showed that the sphere-packing model of granular rocks provides a rather reasonable estimation of propagation speed of the ground vibration.
