A Study on the Energy Penalty of Various Air Side System Failures in Buildings

In order to convince people to adopt automated fault detection and diagnostics (FDD),it is important to identify the potential cost savings. This paper presents the results on the energy cost and the performance impacts for a range of variable air volume (VAV) system faults that was conducted by computer simulation. The study is focusing on the failure associated with the variable air volume (VAV) air conditioning system because VAV system is widely adopted air conditioning system, which can reduce fan energy use under part load operations. However, system, subsystem, control and sensor faults of the air side system would lead to reduced energy benefit as well as occupant discomfort. If the failure of the VAV system can be identified through early detection with utomated FDD,the energy cost penalties on various types of system failure can be avoided and the occupant compliant can be minimized through maintaining comfortable environment. This study will attempt to quantity the potential energy savings of FDD by avoiding those energy penalties through early detection so as to accelerate the acceptance of FDD in the marketplace by building owners. The range of faults that we simulated includes stuck VAV box damper, supply air temperature sensor offset and stuck/leaking cooling coil valve.Apart from the energy savings, the FDD is a predictive maintenance tool that can help the building operators to identify the underling fault by continuously monitoring the system operation. This not only ensures the stability of the system, but also helps building operators to identify the faults that are difficult to notice.
