The Stabilised Mud Block: a Low Carbon Emission Alternative for Masonry Buildings

Significant amount of energy is consumed by buildings for their construction and maintenance. There is a quest for use of low carbon emission materials for buildings in order to mitigate carbon emissions. This paper focuses on some issues pertaining to low carbon emission materials used in masonry.Stabilised mud block (SMB) is a low carbon emission material for load bearing masonry.SMB is also known as compressed earth block (CEB) is used for masonry construction in India and elsewhere. This paper is focused on some aspects of SMB technology such as (a) developments and spread of SMB technology,(b)manufacturing process and factors influencing SMB characteristics (c) energy and carbon emissions of masonry materials and (d) comparison of embodied energy of load bearing residential building. The study concludes that SMB masonry is an energy efficient option leading to 75% embodied energy savings as compared to brick masonry.
