Experimental Research and Numerical Simulation of Airflow Performance in Level-3 Biosafety Laboratory
The paper used airflow modeling and particle-tracking methodologies to compare the air performance in Level-3 Biosafety Laboratory for two different air distribution types. Both air change rates were 20 ACH,and the air was supplied by HEPA supply units in the ceiling. But the position of exhaust grilles was different. One was in the ceiling, and the other was on the wall at low level (0.1m above the floor).Combining the experimental measurements and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations, the recovery time, age of air, ventilation efficiency, air change efficiency and contaminant removal efficiency were worked out in the two air distribution types.Based on the experimental and numerical simulation data,it can be concluded that the cleanliness level and the recovery time are not different in the two exhaust types. In addition, the age of air and air exchange efficiency are better when using an up exhaust mode. However, its more effective when the down exhaust is used to remove the indoor contaminative particles. Moreover, the larger diameter particles remain a longer time in the up exhaust mode.
