Application of Zone Model in Fire Hazard Assessment for Nonindustrial Workplaees

Application of the zone model as a fire hazard assessment tool will be discussed.Nonindustrial workplaces are taken as examples. Statistical fire records on the numbers and causes of office fires in Hong Kong were reviewed first. The steps in carrying out fire hazard assessment were then introduced. The zone model Consolidated Fire and Smoke Transport Model (CFAST) developed at the National Institute of Standards and Technology,USA,was selected as the fire simulation tool.Ten fire cases in different buildings were assessed. The predicted smoke layer temperature and smoke layer interface height in different buildings were analyzed.Effects of the fire size and the floor area of the compartment on the resultant fire environment were studied.
