Control of Airborne Bacteria in a School Classroom Using a Novel Air Purification System

Recently,a demand for air purifiers has expanded into the large public spaces (ex.school classrooms, offices, hospitals). In these cases, air circulation efficiency is the most important factor for improvement of air quality. It is thought that computational fluid dynamics (CFD)technology represents a useful tool for performance evaluation of air purifiers. Therefore we inspected our simulation model for large spaces by an actual survey, and confirmed a high correlation. However,it is not enough to validate the performance of an air purifier by confirming only its steady-state air circulation. Therefore we also examined the ability to control levels of airborne bacteria in a real environment with a simulated air circulation.Surprisingly,we found an efficiency of germ removal of more than 60% even in a room in which 80 people were active. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of germ removal using CFD technology in an air purifier.
