The Effects of Building Characteristics on the Chemical Composition of Surface Films on Residential Glass Windows

Surface films found on the windows of residential buildings have been studied. The main aim of the paper is to assess role of these films in the accumulation of potentially toxic chemicals in residential houses.Although most of the buildings sampled were built with bricks some were less than 50 years old while others were older than fifty years. The results showed that the elemental and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon compositions of the films were strongly dependent on the building characteristics such as the proximity of the building to major roads and industries, number of smokers in the building and types of indoor activities and materials. The presence of the chemicals has implications for human exposure and the fate of pollutants in urban environments. To facilitate the interpretation of the results, information on the composition of the films, along with those on the building characteristics were subjected to multivariate data analysis methods.
