Energy Consumption and Comfort Study in Sub-Saharan Africa
Many studies of building energy consumption have been conducted in Europe,North America and South-East Asia, but little information is available on the sub-Saharan region of Africa.Per capita demand for energy is low there, but fuel supplies are becoming scarce, and an understanding of energy consumption trends is crucial to the development of a sustainable regional energy policy.Reported here is an in-depth survey of domestic energy use and thermal comfort in a region of Northern Nigeria. The study included questionnaires and measurements concerning thermal comfort, along with a survey of energy consumption and appliance use. This study provides empirical thermal comfort data from a city in the tropical savannah region of Africa and was aimed at obtaining a broad understanding of occupantsthermal comfort sensations within the buildings as a contributory factor to energy services demand and use.The main finding was a resultant comfort temperature of 26℃.
