Experimental Research on a Seawater-geothermal Hybrid System

The reliability of seawater source heat pump technique depends upon the seawater intake system. This paper presents an experimental study on a seawater-geothermal hybrid system. To estimate the feasibility, pumping tests were conducted on a vertical beach well intake system which was of 11 m in depth and 40 m away from the beach side over the period between Dec 23 and Dec 27,2007.Water levels and temperatures were recorded hourly. The results show that this intake system delivers a continuous flow of naturally filtered seawater and has a better physical characteristic (i.e.temperature).The system guarantees stability of quantity and a higher temperature of water supply which are both important factors in improving coefficient of performance (COP) and the overall performance of the heat pump system.Besides that, the operating cost of the beach well seawater intake system is cheap and the initial investment is low. These provide a feasible way to solve the intake problem of the seawater source heat pump which will be utilized in coastal cities located to the west of Bohai Bay.
