Energy Performance of Air-cooled Chillers with Sprayed Water on Condenser

Due to the effective energy performance,water-cooled condensers have been applied to the air-conditioning systems in many areas.However,most of the air-conditioning systems existing in Hong Kong employed the use of air-cooled condensers.In order to improve the energy efficiency and effectiveness of those existing air-cooled condensers,a new combination of sprinkler-system operated with the existing air-cooled chiller comes forth.It applies the principle of evaporative cooling to the existing conventional air-cooled chillers by spraying fresh water.This paper aims to test and analyze the feasibility and energy performance of the new combination.Calculations show that the new combination achieved up to 50% increase in the coefficient of performance (COP) of air-cooled chillers in this tropical region of Hong Kong,and the annual energy saving is obvious.
