The Potential for Improved Energy Performance in Pre 2006 Housing - an Irish Case Study - in the Context of the Energy Performance of Buildings Regulations 2006 (S.I.No.666 of 2006)

This paper will present the results of a series of both Dwelling Energy Assessment Procedure (DEAP) calculations (EN 13790:2004) and physical building performance tests carried out on a typicalexisting dwelling in Ireland before and after retrofitting an air-tight barrier and insulation at attic level only,to quantify the potential for thermal performance and energy savings improvements in existing dwellings. The argument for the method is supported by the need to improve the air-tightness as well as the thermal performance of such housing. The study involved the use of a blower door to test the air permeability of the dwelling to EN 13892 standard, and Building Energy Rating (BER) calculations using the Dwelling Energy Assessment Procedure (DEAP).The results are presented and discussed in the following.
