Ventilation and Health in Built Environment
The concept of building ventilation is generalized to ventilation of built environment. The primary purpose of ventilation in built environment is for health. We studied review articles on the history of building ventilation, and carried out a multi-disciplinary systematic literature review on association between ventilation and disease. We reviewed our multi-disciplinary investigations of three SARS outbreaks in Hong Kong and Beijing. There is strong and sufficient evidence for the association between ventilation and spread of some respiratory infectious diseases.Using a social contract model and disease dynamic model,we demonstrated the effective roles of ventilation as a publish health measure. These studies revealed new research challenges in entilation,e.g.ventilation as a public health measure, ventilation of large built environments such as cities and city clusters, and the need for a paradigm shift in ventilation research with a focus on health and the need for a multi-disciplinary research approach in the new century.
