Detection of Wheat Powdery Mildew with Hyperspectral Remote Sensing Technology and Aerial Digital Image

Wheat powdery mildew, caused by Blumeria gramirtis f. sp. triciti, is one of the destructive foliar diseases in wheat. Assessment of the disease severity and its real-time distribution is important for disease control. In this study, hyperspectral remote sensing technology was employed to study the correlation between the canopy reflectance of infected wheat and disease index (DI). Our results showed that a significant correlation between the reflectance and DI was found at the wheat milk fdling stage.Furthermore, ground-based sensing observations revealed that near infrared band such correlation was higher than at red band. However, the correlation decreased in the order of red, green and blue bands when the aerial observations were taken place. A significant correlation exists between reflectance and normalized difference vegetation indices (NDVI). Our results showed that field wheat powdery mildew infection in a large geographical scale can be effectively assessed using non-destructive hyperspectral remote sensing technology.
