The Effects of Aluminum on Inward-Rectifier Potassium Currents in Epidermal Cell Protoplasts within the Allium cepa L

We used whole-cell patch-clamp techniques to.investigate the effect of Al3+ on K+ currents in protoplasts isolated from epidermal cell within the Allium cepa L. The properties of these currents were similar to those seen in inward rectifying K+ channels in other plant tissues. In 10 uM AlCl3 the activated inward K+ currents were significantly larger than in the 0 uM AlCl3 at more negative voltages .In contrast, in 100 uM AlCl3, when depolarizing voltages were more negative, the inward K+ currents were inhibited relative to the currents in 10 uM AlCla.Thus, AlCl3 can have dual effects (stimulatory and inhibitory) on inwardly rectifying K+ channels in epidermal cell protoplasts of allium cepa L.
