A study on the conservation of pagoda in the ruin of Niya in Xinjiang of China
Niya site,a world-famous ruin in Xinjiang,which lies in the Taklamakan desert,was an important place of connecting the East and the West in the Silk Road in the ancient time.The noticeable pagoda in the center of ruin,is a symbolized structure.During the passed 1500s years,the pagoda was destroyed seriously due to natural and artificial factor.After investigation on the spot,we found the main diseases in pagoda are wind erosion,especially a deadly element,water erosion,crevices,collapse and hole.By analysis of diseases,in consideraion of surroundings where the pagoda located in and abided by Principles for the Conservation of Heritage Sites in China,in the authors opinion,for the purpose of long-time exist of pagoda and laying a good foundation for large-scale conservation in the future,it is necessary to adopt rescue intervention to reinforce the base of structure firstly,at the same time,renovate the crevices and fill the hole.
