The Impacts of Desertification on Cultural Relics in DunHuang
In recent decades,because of physical and human factors,the desertification in Dunhuang city increased severely and posed a serious threat to the protection of cultural relics.Based on Landsat TM images,fieldworks,cultural relics map,digital terrain model and other data,RS and GIS technologies are used to investigate the status of desertification in Dunhuang with interactive interpretation method,after having established the classification system of desertification and interpretation keys.In the end,the desertification status map is produced and the impacts of desertification on cultural relics are analyzed.According to the investigation,it reveals that the area of desertification land in Dunhuang reaches 7.551×103km2,accounting for its total area in 28.49%,and distributes mainly on the south side of Shule River;The main levels are the mid and severe ones,whose sum area accounts for the total area in 65% upwards,imply the desertification in Dunhuang is very serious;Land desertification has caused serious damage and threat to the cultural relics.What can be concluded is that Mogao Grottoes,West Thousand Buddha Grottoes and Shouchang Ancient City are in the severe desertification area directly,Yangguan Pass and Yumen Pass in the mid,and Xuanquanzhi site,Hecang Ancient City,Majuanwan site,and most part of the Han Great Wall in the slight.
