Improving the environment is an important means of preserving large earthen sites:a report about Liangzhu Tangshan Site in Hangzhou,P.R.of China
Two positions of Tangshan Site 500m away from each other,a Neolithic archaeological rammed-earth building in Liangzhu Sites in China were studied in this article, preserving statuses of which were analyzed and compared by respectively investigating the building technique, the environmental conditions, the ground status, the water table, and the vegetation. It was found that the preserving status of Position ① is much better than that of Position ②,due to the combined effects of environmental factors, including rainfalls, water table, the orientation of the profile, the gradient of the slope, the vegetation, the ambient establishments, and the water drainage system. As for large earthen construction sites of South region with humid climate, water table cannot be adjusted artificially, and awning in not easily built. Our investigations suggest that the destruction speed of ancient rammed earth buildings can be significantly alleviated by adjusting the vegetations, the ventilation, the sunlight, and the drainage system.Improving the environment is an important means of preserving rammed earth buildings.
