Control Electronics for a Tissue Sensing Piezoelectric Bimorph

Differentiation among distinct media that have similar mechanical characteristics using piezoelectric transducers is a technique based on the detection and evaluation of different electrical parameters. We developed a high sensitivity system using a piezoelectric bimorph. One of the layers is used for the resonant excitation of vibration and the other layer is used as a sensing element.Frequency shift and transfer function of the bimorphs voltages Usensor/UActuator are detected and evaluated at constant phase utilizing a Phase Lock Loop (PLL) implemented with a fuzzy logic algorithm. In order to get the highest sensitivity from our system, two approaches for the signal evaluation are presented. The first one is based on analogue electronics and the second approach consists on a complete digital solution using microcontrollers. We have conducted a series of measurements of gelatine gel phantoms at different concentrations. The bimorph sensor system is able to detect even minimal differences in gelatine gel phantoms.
