Normal Sintering of Li/Ta Co-doped (K,Na)NbO3 Lead-free Piezoceramics:Processing Effect on Phase Transitions and Densification
(K,Na)NbO3-based system is considered to be one of the best alternatives as lead-free piezoceramics, but its performance is extremely sensitive to fabrication process, which is mainly due to serious volatilization of alkali components during sintering. In this study, the effect of local sintering atmosphere on the densification and phase structure of lead-free piezoceramics with a nominal composition of (Li0.04K0.44Na0.52)(Nb0.85Ta0.15)O3 were studied. It was found thatdensification of (K,Na)NbO3-based ceramics occurs due to liquid phase sintering mechanism and the volatilization plays a role to generate the liquid phase. However, the volatilization causes the compositional deviation and hence affects the phase structure and piezoelectric properties of the resultant ceramics. Finally,a special sintering method was employed to control the volatilization and densification, which produced a lead-free piezoceramic sample with high piezoelectric coefficient d33 up to 251pC/N.
