Feasibility Study on HCFC22 Alternative Refrigerant:Propane (R290) and Its Solubility with Lubrication Oils

Due to ozone depletion and global warming effects, environmental friendly refrigerants with null ozone depletion (ODP) and low global warming potential (GWP) are required for the new generation of refrigerators and air conditioners. The natural refrigerant propane (R290),with excellent thermodynamic properties, naturally exists in the atmosphere and has neither ozone depletion potential nor significant global warming potential,so its a good alternative of Freon refrigerant to be used as working fluid in air conditioning and heat pump systems. In this paper, the thermo-physical properties, thermodynamic features and cycle characteristics of Propane (R290) and HCFC22 (R22) are studied.Besides,an experimental installation is set and testing methods are optimized to analyze the character of propane mixing with various lubrication oils and with different ratio.By experiment,we find that PAG synthetic oil is the best choice for the refrigerating system with propane as refrigerant, taking into consideration of the safety requirements,COP,returning oil of the compressor and so on.Results show that propane (R290) may offer significant increases in performance. This is especially true if the plant is conceived to take advantage of its specific thermo-physical characteristics in comparison with R22.Most importantly, by fixing propane (R290) concentration alarm settings, adding a certain proportion of non-flammable refrigerants (such as R22) into propane, and maintaining good ventilation, propane (R290) can be applied to small-size heat pump systems, which were dominated by Freon refrigerant in the past.Cheap, rich in the nature, easy to get,and environmental friendly, with certain measures being taken, for example choosing appropriate electrical devices, installing fans at the bottom of the refrigerating unit, instituting strict security rules and so on,propane (R290) will certainly be extensively used in the refrigerating system and bring us huge economic and social benefits in the future.
