Assessment of Simulation Models for Heat Transfer in Suction Mufflers of Reciprocating Compressors
Predictions of heat transfer in suction mufflers of reciprocating compressors have been carried out with two levels of numerical modeling, represented by two- and threedimensional differential formulations. The finite volume methodology was employed to numerically solve the governing conservation equations (continuity, momentum and energy)for the fluid flow and heat transfer in the muffler.A hermetic reciprocating compressor was instrumented with several thermocouples to measure temperature at different positions of the muffler wall. This experimental data was employed to prescribe boundary conditions at the external surface of the muffler wall. The capability of each numerical modeling approach was assessed through comparisons between numerical and experimental results for refrigerant superheating in the suction muffler.
