State of the Art Design and Calculation of Vessels and Piping Systems in Reciprocating Compressors
The pipe work and pressure vessels of piston compressors are exposed to extremely high loads, such as dead weight, internal pressure, temperature, dynamic forces, misalignments and seismic acceleration. The design and calculation of these components are described in numerous international standards and country-specific guidelines.Nevertheless,an extensive finite element analysis (FEA) is necessary if an accurate prediction of the fatigue endurance is to be made. The precise modeling of the crankcase, distance pieces, crankshafts, flywheels, cylinders, pulsation dampers, separators, coolers, pipes and their supports,is essential and exact load data is just as important. In this paper, the most up-to-date techniques and methods for the calculation of process gas compressors of up to two Mega Watt are used, taking into account the static loads, such as dead weight, misalignment, temperature and dynamic loads (gas forces in cylinders, mass forces and couples,as well as shaking forces). The evaluation of stress is then used to carry out the fatigue endurance analysis, taking various norms and guidelines into consideration.Stresses resulting from internal pressure and operating temperature, when the components are completely free of stress after assembly, are of decisive importance for the number of system start-ups.The influence that the pre-stressed conditions, due to misalignment and internal pressure on the vibrating shapes and thus on the vibration and stress amplitudes in the structure are also investigated.
