Sealing Issue through the Gap between Vane Tip and Cylinder Wall in the Rotary Vane Expander

Due to the loss of contact between the vane tip and cylinder wall in some positions, excessive gas leakage through the gap between vane tip and cylinder wall exists in the rotary vane expander. The mathematical model of the vane dynamics was established to analyze the vane movement, focusing on why the vane tip cant contact the cylinder wall and how to keep the tight contact. The simulated results were verified by the high speed video recording of the vane movement during operation of the expander.A good agreement between the experimental data and calculated results was obtained, both of which demonstrated that every two adjacent vanes had different motion behaviors.Due to the impact from the radial suction gas,all the vanes were pushed towards the vane slot bottom. One vane could rebound back to the cylinder wall quickly by the pressure difference acting on it,but the neighboring vane could not reach the cylinder wall until at the angle of 70 °,where it had a impact on the cylinder wall and then rebounded several times and contact the cylinder wail finally.By arranging springs in the vane slots underneath the vanes,a tight contact between the vane tip and cylinder wall could be kept and the seal could be improved significantly. However, the friction will be increased, which should be controlled in the future.
