Safety procedures in longwall retreating in Monte Sinni Mine,Sardinia
Carbosulcis is a mining company,owned by the Regione Autonoma delia Sardegna (Italy).The Company operates Monte Sinni Mine,located the in South-Western part of Sardegna island,about 70km far from the regional capital,Cagliari.At present,the annual production is about 450.000 t of saleable coal (1.000.000 t of raw coal) but it is planned to increase production up to 1,000,000 t of saleable coal per year.This annual production is the calculated break-even point.Due to the characteristics of the coal,with a relatively high content of sulphur and pyrites,a great attention has to be paid in prevention of spontaneous combustion.In the past some heating in the faces goaf led to spon-com.The mine has therefore developed a system of safety management in order to prevent the risk.To ensure a regular and safe production,one of the most important items is the gas monitoring and control,both along roadways and in the goaf of the face.A spontaneous combustion that occurs in the faces goal can cause a loose of production and,if not properly detected and held up,fatal accidents.This paper reviews detection methods for gas and heating currently operated in the Monte Sinni mine.They include monitoring,laboratory analysis,training of fire-fighting crews,prevention and sealing methods and face salvage procedures in case of spontaneous combustion.The mine has its own laboratory for gas analysis,operated 24h/d in case of need,for a rapid response.A control room is always operated 24h/d for centralized gas and ventilation monitoring and a rescue crew can be alerted and is able to operate within 60 minutes.In particular,face salvage procedures in case of fire allow relocating face equipment in a safe way even in hard conditions,avoiding or reducing the risk of losses and the need of delivery of new equipment.Coal heating is a world wide problem in coal mining;early detection and risk control are key-points to ensure a safe face retreating and to avoid production losses.
