Evaluation of a simulation program for predicting gas emission rata

Prediction of gas emission rate is essential for optimum designs of ventilation and gas drainage as well as for planning of gas control measures. For the purpose of accurately estimating the volume of methane gas emitted from coal seams (or rock strata) during mining process,a simulation program named Mine Gas flow 3D (MGF-3D) for predicting methane gas emission rate was developed. The MGF-3D program takes into account possible effects of changes in the mining-induced stress on the gas permeability of coal seam along with the effect of groundwater on the gas emission rate.MGF-3D is also capable of estimating the gas drainage rate per gas drainage hole. This program is characterized by its capability of dealing with rock stress distribution analysis,gas-liquid two-phase flow, and analysis utilizing a three-dimensional finite element method. In this study,an operating coal mine was analyzed with this program, and the results showed that gas emissions rate predicted by the MGF-3D program almost correspond to the observed data.
