MOISTURE CONTENT, STRENGTH AND FRACTURE ENERGY OF CONCRETE

Concrete performances, such as strength, fracture energy and strain softening, fluctuate significantly depending on moisture content and surface tension of contacted liquids. An ordinary concrete was prepared and cured in the standard curing room for 28 days, oven dried, re-humidified,seawater saturated, or water saturated with or without water repellent treatment, to investigate the influence of moisture content and surface tension of immersion liquid in concrete, by means of compressive strength, three-point bending and wedge splitting tests. Results show that the moisture content in concrete influenced its strength and fracture energy, the higher the moisture content, the lower its strengths and fracture energy. And such effect was more evident if concrete was saturated in seawater. The specimens of seawater saturated and water saturated after water repellent treatment had higher strengths and fracture energy than the ones without water repellent treatment. This effect has to be taken into consideration both in design of practical engineering project and in prediction of service life for concrete structures in water, especially seawater contacted environment. In order to prolong the service life of such structures, water repellent treatment may be considered.
