Solidification Microstructure Evolution Induced by Ultrasonic Vibration
The solidification of Pb-Sn hypoeutectic and eutectic alloys is accomplished by introducing ultrasonic vibration with a frequency of 16 kHz into alloy from sample top.As the ultrasound power increases, the primary (Pb) phase in Pb-Sn hypoeutectic alloy exhibits a microstructural transition of equiaxed dendrite fragmented dendrite spherical structure.A lot of eutectic grains appear in both hypoeutectic and eutectic alloys, and the crystal lattice constants of (Pb) and (Sn) phases are reduced. Moreover,if the ultrasound power is higher enough, the periphery of Pb-Sn alloy can be disintegrated into many small spheres.Theoretical analyses indicate that the fragmented dendrites should be mainly caused by ultrasonic streaming and surface wave, whereas the globular growth of primary phase and eutectic grains by ultrasonic cavitation.
