The influence of working fluids and regenerator parameters on performance of the Stirling-cycle refrigerator

The present work is an experimental study of performance with deferent working fluids and regenerator configurations on the Stirling-cycle refrigerator. The V-type integral Stirling-cycle refrigerator (VISR) consisting of an expansion cylinder,a compression cylinder and a heat exchanger in-between was developed and tested. The expansion and compression pistons are V-shaped and driven by a crank-shift mechanism.A cold head connected to the expansion cylinder provides the cooling capacity.Using four kinds of configurations as in the regenerator of the VISR Stirling-cycle refrigerator,an experimental apparatus was designed. The effect of working fluids on the performance of the VISR Stirling-cycle refrigerator was studied,i.e.helium and nitrogen. The results show that the proper match of the structure parameters of the compression cylinder, the expansion cylinder and the regenerator for the Stirling refrigerator is very important, and there is the optimal configuration for the system performance. The optimal rotation speeds on performance of the system are studied. The cooling capacity of those two working fluids with the rotation speeds increases almost as a linear, but cooling capacity of the nitrogen with the rotation speeds increased to turning point around 1000 rpm.The characteristics curves of the prototype VISR could be applied to other usages.
