A HYBRID METHOD FOR DAMAGE DETECTION IN COMPOSITE BEAMS EMBEDDED WITH PIEZOELECTRIC LAYERS
In this paper, the electro-mechanical impedance (EMI) technique is adopted to detect the bonding imperfection of laminated beams using high-frequency piezoelectric signatures. A model of a simply supported laminated beam embedded with a piezoelectric layer which acts as sensor/actuator,is hence studied, using the state-space method. A Linear spring-like interface model is employed to simulate the behavior of slip-type bonding imperfection. The influence of adhesion between the host laminate and the piezoelectric layer on the electric impedance signature is also investigated numerically. A non-parametric damage index called covariance is then employed to identify the severity of bonding imperfection.
