TEST VALIDATION OF A DAMAGE DETECTION METHOD FOR A BEAM USING MACRO-STRAIN FROM LONG-GAUGE FBG SENSORS
Most of the vibration-based structural identification and damage detection methods require the modal properties such as vibration frequencies and/or modal shapes extracted from measured vibration signals. However, it has been reported that lower vibration frequencies are usually not sensitive to variation of local structural parameters and modal shapes are always noise-polluted.On the other hand, optic fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensors as an advanced sensing technologies present reliable ways for vibration-induced strain measurement for engineering structures. Because the structural damage is always local and local damage will lead to large local strain and optic fiber sensors break. In order to avoid this problem, long-gauge FBG sensors have been proposed for civil engineering application. Therefore, it is meaningful to develop identification methodologies using macro-strain measurements from long-gauge FBG sensors. In this study, an approach using vibration-induced bending strain measurement time history for a simply-supported beam with neural networks is proposed and validated using test measurements. The performance of the proposed approach for original beam element stiffness identification and damage detection is studied using noisy macro-strain measurements from different number of sensors with different gauge length and arrangement scenarios. Results show that the proposed parametric identification method can accurately evaluate the beam element stiffness and locate and quantify damages.
