DATA-BASED HYSTERETIC PERFORMANCE IDENTIFICATION FOR A NONLINEAR STRUCTURE EQUIPPED WITH MR DAMPER

Because damage initiation and development in engineering structures is a nonlinear process, the development of efficient and reliable identification approaches which are suitable for nonlinear systems is crucial for creditable damage initiation detection and severity identification.Moreover, in most of the current model updating and identification method, the mass distribution of a structure is usually treated as known. But the mass of an engineering structure can not be estimated correctly according to the design drawing directly and the error in the mass estimation affects the structural stiffness identification results. Therefore, it is important to develop an algorithm for the identification of full parameters including mass, stiffness and damping force for nonlinear structures.In this study, the nonlinear behavior of a multi-degree-of-freedom frame structure with a magnetorheological (MR) damper is identified with a general data-based approach using the dynamic response and excitation measurement time series. No information about the systems mass properties is needed. The performance of the proposed methodology is validated by numerical simulation for a 4-story frame structure equipped with a MR damper. The mass, stiffness and damping force of the frame structure with and without the MR damper are identified independently and the hysteretic nonlinear performance of the MR damper is identified quantitatively and compared with its numerical model. Simulation results show that the proposed data-based approach is a possible way for nonlinear behavior identification and damage detection of engineering structures.
