SEISMIC UPGRADING OF SHEAR-CRITICAL RC FRAMES USING CFRPCONFINED BEAM HAUNCHES

In the past earthquakes, the shear failure of beam-column joints was a main reason for the collapse of reinforced concrete (RC) frames that had been built according to previously non-seismic provisions. But the existence of transverse beams brings a major obstacle to directly strengthen the beam-column joints in space frames. A retrofit method using the beam haunches confined by carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) sheets was designed for this difficult task. Two frame models were constructed and one of them was upgraded using the technique. The results of quasi-static tests showed that the technique was successful in improving the seismic behaviour of RC frames, which were drawn from the comparison of test results between control and strengthened ones in aspect of failure modes, load versus displacement curves, strength and stiffness degradation, and cumulative energy dissipation capacity.
