THE SHM SYSTEM OF GUANGZHOU NEW TV TOWER AND THE BENCHMARK PROBLEM FOR SHM OF HIGH-RISE STRUCTURES

A structural health monitoring (SHM) system for Guangzhou New TV Tower has been designed and is being implemented by the Consortium of the Hong Kong Polytechnic University and Sun Yat-Sen University. Consisting of about 16 types of 600 sensors, the monitoring system is one of few SHM practices that integrate in-construction monitoring and in-service monitoring. Regarding this SHM system as the testbed, a benchmark problem on SHM of high-rise slender structures is being proposed, under the support of ANCRiSST and ISHMII. This paper will outline the design and implementation of the SHM system, report some preliminary results during construction, Typhoon and earthquake events, and address some key issues related to the development of the benchmark problem for high-rise structures.
