SEISMIC DESIGN OF STRUCTURE WITH SUPPLEMENTAL VISCOUS DAMPERS BASED ON IMPROVED CAPACITY SPECTRUM METHOD

A simplified procedure for design of supplemental viscous dampers to a structure is presented based on the improved capacity method. After seismic performance of the structure to be retrofitted is evaluated using the improved capacity method the required amount of added damping ratio to meet the given performance objective is evaluated by a simple formula. The required amount of supplemental damping is then distributed throughout the stories of the structure using proposed three story-wise distribution patterns of dampers. The final design is verified by time history analyses of 10-story steel moment frame with added viscous dampers using an artificial earthquake record compatible with the design spectrum. According to the nonlinear response history analysis results, the roof displacements of the damped structure designed by the presented method match well with the given target value and the interstory drift ratios of the designed structure essentially meet the given performance objective.
