THIN-SHELL STRUCTURES IN CIVIL ENGINEERING: SOME RECENT ADVANCES
Thin-shell structures are widely used in civil engineering applications. Examples include silos, tanks, tubular towers, pipes and shell roofs. In 1996, the author published a state-of-the art review on the buckling of thin metallic shells (Teng, 1996) which identified some key areas for further work, including: (a) imperfections in real structures and their influence; (b) buckling of shells under local or non-uniform loads and localized compressive stresses; and (c) the use of computer buckling analysis in the stability design of complex thin-shell structures. The present paper provides a summary of research at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University on civil engineerting thin-shell structures since then. The majority of the work has been concerned with the analysis, behaviour and design of thin metallic shells of revolution undertaken in response to the research needs identified in Teng (1996). The key issues examined include the nonlinear and post-buckling analysis of shells of revolution, the behaviour and design of steel shell junctions in steel silos and tanks, and the evaluation of the buckling strength of cylindrical shells with realistic geometric imperfections and subjected to realistic non-uniform loads. In addition, a significant amount of work has been conducted on the development of a new form of shell roof structures, namely Comshell roofs which consist of a steel based shell formed by bolting together press-formed modular units and a concrete topping. The Comshell system was proposed as an alterative to concrete shell roofs whose use has been in decline due to the labour-intensive nature of the construction process.
