3-D imaging of mantle conductivity based on inversion of satellite C-responses: Proof of concept

Recently Kuvshinov et al. (2006) presented an approach to detect large-scale mantle conductivity anomalies by analysis of magnetic observations made by low-Earth-orbiting satellites. From the observations C-responses are estimated on a 2-D grid at a number of periods. Although the analysis of the C-responses gives an idea about the geometry of mantle anomalies, the recovery of responses is only a prerequisite for a retrieval of the 3-D distribution of conductivity. In this work we present a 3-D inversion scheme that solves this problem. It exploits a gradient type optimization method, along with a forward problem solver based on the integral equation approach. The dramatic saving in computations makes use of an adjoint approach to calculate efficiently gradients of misfit. In support of the efficient gradient calculation, formulas for magnetic Greens tensor have been derived. We test our 3-D inversion scheme by inverting C-responses calculated in a realistic 3-D conductivity model of the Earth.
