Digital filters for electromagnetic migration of marine electromagnetic data

Over the last few years, there has been growing interest in developing fast interpretation methods for marine controlled-source electromagnetic (MCSEM) data. In this paper we introduce a new approach for fast imaging of anomalous resistive structures in sea-bottom formations. Our approach uses the electromagnetic (EM) migration method. We develop a migration algorithm based on the construction of a digital filter for EM migration. The effectiveness of the developed technique is demonstrated by processing the numerical experimental data computed for synthetic models and practical Troll MCSEM data collected off shore of Norway. The results show that the digital filter for EM migration can be used effectively in solving geoelectrical problems. The approximate location and interface between formations with different resistivities can be determined from the observed EM data using EM migration. The most distinguishing feature of the technique is related to the low cost of the computations, which require just a few seconds for processing and interpretation of EM data on a single PC.
