Short-Term and Imminent EM Characteristics of the Wenchuan Earthquake
Based on latest observation data by MDCB-5 in combination with geologic setting, the characteristics of short-term and imminent EM anomalies of the Wenchuan earthquake are studied and correlated. It is confirmed that the M8.0 earthquake was caused by outbreak of the Longmenshan thrust clockwise slip faults controlled by eastward movement of Tibet plateau. It is believed that seismic precursors were not observed before the earthquake. Studies show that some short-term and imminent EM anomalies of the impending earthquake were observed by MDCB-5. The characteristics of these EM precursors including features of background EM anomalies, the structure, magnitude and orientation of local EM anomalies are analyzed, and the epicenter of the earthquake is predicted by intersection method of 32-azimuth EM anomalies from four observatories, which coincides with the area of Wenchuan earthquake. From the study the short-term and imminent EM anomalies can be used as precursors of similar earthquakes in the future.
