Imaging subsurface structure in eastern boundary of Qatrani basaltic flows by MT data

Eastern boundary area of Qatrani is one of the significantly active and the most historical and recent earthquakes occur in SW Cairo. Magnetotelluric data (MT) were obtained for long period alongseveral profiles crossing the active faults in Central part of the region. The remote reference MT method and robust technique were used in the field measurement and data processing. The impedance tensor decomposition was carried out for study of local distortion of the data. Smooth curves of apparent resistivities and phase angles as functions of period for both stations were obtained. The results showed that the induction arrows (tipper) referred to conductive zones which indicating the active faults in the study area. 2D-MT data to invert resistivity, phase and tipper simultaneously was employed. This study focuses on using MT method as an efficient tool to study the conductivity anomalies and faults in relation to recent earthquakes in the study area.
