Optimal electromagnetic survey configuration for locating the dipping dyke

A dipping conductivity dyke is a typical target in mining EM exploration. We consider the problem of optimal survey design for locating a dipping dyke. The numerical modeling of the dipping dyke effect is conducted using 3D Contraction integrate equation method. We examine four survey configurations, and the survey configuration with source along or parallel to the strike of dyke is test to be the optimal configuration. In the paper, we discuss the influence of the dyke resistivity, the depth of the top of the dyke, and dyke height on the detectability by using the optimal electromagnetic survey configuration. The major parameter of the dykes EM response is the ratio of anomalous field signal (S) and noise (N).The result show that the dyke resistivity and the dyke top-buried depth affect the S/N curve more but the dyke height does less.
