Urban fringe defining based on multi-temporal remote sensing images

Urban fringe is the transition belt between the urban and rural,which is the most active part in urban sprawl process.In urban fringe,urban land use type is mixed with other land use types,such as agriculture,forest,rangeland and etc.None-urban land use types are soon converted to urban land use type in the urban expansion process,especially in developing countries e.g.China.The urban fringe is defined by its outer boundary and inner boundary,which separates the inner urban core,urban fringe and rural area.In this article,we put forward a new method for urban fringe define,multi-temporal remote sensing images are introduced in this research.From multi-temporal remote sensing images we can extract useful information for urban fringe,such as land use spatial structure,land use change ration and velocity.This information is useful to find the outer boundary and inner boundary of the urban fringe.This article analysis the Beijing city using multi-temporal Landsat images (1988,1994,2000),spatial pattern variables and land use change information is used to define the urban fringe outer boundary and inner boundary.
