The applications of IP method in engineering and environmental survey

Induced polarization (IP) is a relaxation phenomenon of polarized charges and can be observed in both frequency- and time-domain experiments.Geophysicists have study IP for more than 80 years.The nature of IP phenomenon is complicated and not very clear.IP responses of rocks contain very rich information on the grain-size,clay content,iron content,permeability,etc.Clay and metallic particles are considered to be the main source of IP responses.In this paper,we introduce two different IP mechanisms corresponding to the IP process of clay and metallic particles and summarize the applications of IP in geophysical exploration and engineering and environmental survey.
