Wavelet transform and its application in thin-bed study

The continuous wavelet transform (CWT) has been widely used in geophysical data processing and interpretation. The commonly used wavelet is Morlet wavelet (MW).By the test of wedge model,it shows that Morlet wavelet is not suitable for the thin-bed analysis. In our paper,we use the modified Morlet wavelet (MMW).The MMW introduces a new parameter k which controls the bandwidth. The example of wedge model shows that the MMW has better time resolution than MW,it can be used in the thin-bed analysis.Based on the tuning theory of thin-bed,we decompose the spectrum amplitude with CWT.The process is shown as follows: firstly, calculate the amplitude spectrum of the objective section; Then we choose the dominant frequency as the iso-frequency.From the iso-frequency section,we can get not only the time information but also the frequency information. The theoretic and practical data draw the conclusion that the MMW has the better response of thin-bed analysis.
