Investigation of geological hazard body using electromagnetic computerized crosshcle tomography

Geological features such as fractures and voids pose potential hazards to the safe construction and operation of tunnels. The high resolution of electromagnetic computerized tomography has been successfully applied to the detection of such features prior to the construction of a railway tunnel through Qiyue Mountain in central China. We adopt a symmetrical dipole antenna to transmit electromagnetic waves in one borehole and a flagelliform antenna in another borehole as receiver and applied the algorithm SIRT to reconstruct the attenuation coefficient distribution between the boreholes.Combining the results with information from engineering drilling,we were able to deduce precisely the size, shape and spatial distribution of cavities, corrosion fragmentation and rock cranny zones among the five boreholes. The results show that electromagnetic CT is of particular superiority in detecting underground geological hazard bodies in carbonate rock area.
