Detection of underground obstacles by wave dispersion characteristic imaging technique based on the HWAW method

For the planning of civil construction,detection of underground obstacles such as pre-existing structure,anomaly and cavity is very important.In this paper,the applicable potential of the harmonic wavelet analysis of waves (HWAW) method to detect underground obstacles was investigated.The numerical studies of the finite element method using ABAQUS Standard were performed to simulate the HWAW method.Obstacles shaped of 2m × 2m rectangular cavity in a homogeneous half space were considered with a variety of embedment depths.2D images of Rayleigh wave phase velocity and the time history of wave at each receiver were used to detect the target obstacles.Finite element results show the feasibility of HWAW method to detect obstacle.Based on the results of the numerical study,field verification test was performed at the site having underground utility-pipe conduit.The testing results were compared with those of conventional geophysical methods for obstacle detecting such as GPR,DC resistivity,EM,magnetic prospecting and the applicability of the proposed method was discussed.
