PARTIAL FACTOR METHOD FOR DURABILITY DESIGN OF CONCRETE STRUCTURES UNDER THE CRITERION OF CARBONATION LIFE

Carbonation is the premise condition of the occurrence of reinforcement corrosion for concrete structures under the common atmosphere environment. The resistance ability of carbonation plays an important role in the initiation period and its the basic problem in the propagation period. In a certain range, the thicker protective cover of concrete can protect reinforcement against corrosion effectively, but it cannot always acts as the effective role in protection with the continued growth of the thickness. In addition to the protective cover of concrete, there are numerous other influence factors related with the durability of concrete structures. The compressive strength of concrete can represent some properties of other indexes of concrete materials to a certain degree. Based on the failure criterion of carbonation life, the reliability indexes under different compressive strength and cover thickness of concrete are studied with the aid of the reliability theory and a theoretical & empirical combined deterioration model. The suggested values of target reliability indexes are proposed. On the base, the partial factor method for durability design of carbonation life of concrete structures is established and the design expressions are given. The proposed methodology can be used in durability design for the new concrete structures which reinforcement corrosion are not allowed under the common atmospheric environment condition, and it can ensure that the concrete structures will achieve the required service life with a certain reliability level.
